here is a particular kind of silence that greets you when you first walk through the doors of a monastery — not the silence of emptiness, but of fullness. Something is happening here, quietly and without announcement, and you find yourself wanting to stay inside it. That is where this year begins: with a yes spoken softly, almost to myself, in the presence of the community.
